About doctors sponsorship in the UK

NHS trusts sponsor international medical graduates across every grade — from CT1 / ST1 specialty training posts through trust-grade SHOs, registrars, SAS doctors, and consultant positions. The Health and Care Worker visa applies, so no NHS surcharge and reduced application fees.

Most overseas doctors enter through the PLAB route (PLAB 1 abroad, PLAB 2 in the UK), although doctors with EEA, USMLE, or sponsored postgraduate qualifications may be eligible for direct GMC registration. Royal College exams (MRCP, MRCS, etc.) significantly improve job prospects.

Every listing below is from a Worker-licensed NHS trust verified against the Home Office register.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need GMC registration before applying for jobs?
You can apply for trust posts with GMC registration in progress, but you need full GMC registration with a licence to practise before starting clinical work. Most trusts will issue the Certificate of Sponsorship once you have a GMC ID number and have passed PLAB 2 (or equivalent).
What is the salary threshold for sponsored doctors?
All NHS medical posts from FY2 upwards clear the Skilled Worker threshold. Pay scales are nationally set under the BMA contract; the Health and Care Worker visa does not require an additional salary check beyond the contract minimum.
Can I bring my family on a Health and Care Worker visa?
Yes. Spouse/partner and children under 18 can apply as dependants, are exempt from the IHS, and can work or study freely in the UK.
