About teachers sponsorship in the UK

Shortage-subject teaching posts — maths, physics, chemistry, computing, and modern foreign languages — are on the UK immigration salary list, meaning a reduced salary threshold for the Skilled Worker visa.

Most large multi-academy trusts hold a sponsor licence and routinely recruit internationally. Standalone schools and many small primary federations do not — so the verified-sponsor filter is particularly important for teaching roles. Local-authority maintained schools are sometimes sponsored via the council's licence.

Overseas-qualified teachers can apply for QTS through the new international QTS route (Australia, Canada, NZ, Singapore, USA, EEA, and several others) or via Assessment Only once in post.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need QTS before I can be sponsored?
No — many trusts sponsor teachers who are progressing towards QTS via the Assessment Only or iQTS routes. You will, however, need a recognised teaching qualification from your home country and (typically) at least 2 years of post-qualification experience.
Which subjects are on the shortage list?
Maths, physics, chemistry, computing, and modern foreign languages all qualify for the lower 'going rate' salary threshold under the immigration salary list.
Can I be sponsored as a primary teacher?
Yes. Primary teaching is eligible for the Skilled Worker visa, but the salary threshold is higher because it is not on the shortage list — most primary roles in London and the South East clear it; some posts in lower-cost areas may not.
